The chip is a non locking device. Its not necessary to replace it, but doing so restores the toner level to 100%. It removes the warning message from the printers display and restores the toner low, toner out alerts and the supplies status report.

Specific instructions included - Fits in place of the original on the side of the cartridge. You must cut away some of the plastic housing to gain access.  You will need a sharp knife.
